I've been having a blast eyeballing all the sharky eye candy on Etsy this past week! One of my favorites was the Great White shark print seemingly peering  at you through a porthole picture frame.

I got some work done on the lower jaw of my current shark sculpture. While that was curing I marked off the eye locations and drilled out and (temporarily) installed the eyes.

If I don't play hooky and go to the beach tomorrow I may drill the locations for the pectoral/dorsal fins.

Shark Sculpture Work In Progress

I wanted to have this shark sculpture finished and listed in my Etsy shop to coincide with the kick off of Shark Week 2012 this Sunday. Unfortunately it's been slow going.

At this stage the work has been all about wet sanding and filling in the low spots. Speaking of Shark Week one of my shark pieces was featured in this shark week themed treasury:
You can use coupon code SHARKWEEK12 at my shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/BlacknickSculpture
to get 10% off my shark art at checkout.

This weekend I'm hoping to install the eyes - and jaws in this shark. The eyes will give the shark some  'tude'  and the jaws and teeth are always fun to design!

Celebrating Shark Week 2012 With A New Sculpture

It's been awhile since I've sculpted a shark. And since August 12th kicks off the start of Shark Week 2012 : Shark Week : Discovery Channel I thought it was the perfect time to return to one of my favorite subjects! It is always fun rummaging through my reference materials hunting up shark photos.

Finding a carving pattern for a Great White shark would help guide my work.

Making the armature for my sculpture out of styrofoam would save on clay and weight!

Mounting the styrofoam sections on aluminum wire which is bolted to a base.

Cutting the styrofoam to give the shark a gentle curve.

           Starting to add Apoxie clay.

Tracing the fin pattern onto my clay fin.

Fins ready for carving and refining.

Pectoral fins and dorsal fin primed before final sanding. I'll be posting more photos as work on my Great White shark sculpture progresses.

Blue Mohawk For Charity

I've mean meaning to share the pictures of the mohawk I recently got to help raise funds for The St.Baldrick's Foundation for childhood cancer research. Brian Blacknick - A St. Baldrick's Participant

The first thing we had to do was bleach my hair so the blue dye would show more vividly.

After washing out the bleach my wife Diane sectioned off my hair to try and get a straight mohawk line. Not an easy task since I have 3 or 4 cowlicks struggling for control of my hair growth pattern at any given minute!
Diane used a nylon artists brush to apply the Special Effects Blue Haired Freak dye to my hair. After 30 minutes I washed it out. Whoa! My hair was some kind of major blue!
I thought it was a little too long for a mohawk so my Mother and Diane snipped away to try and get it the right length.

The ladies used what styling gunk they had on hand but the "hawk" wouldn't stay in place!

The next day I picked up a tube of Got2b glued spiking glue. The tube said "screaming hold". They aren't kidding! A little of this stuff and I had a gravity defying mohawk in no time. I probably could have run head long into a wall and not dented this bad boy!
I wear hats a great deal of the time and I haven't figured out how to pull that off without flattening my mohawk. It might need to be taken down another notch or two!

My Interview At Amaltheas Attic

Florence Ivy was kind enough to interview me on her blog Amaltheas Attic about my fundraising effort to raise money for childhood cancer research. If you'd like to take a look here is a link to the interview:
Helping Out The Sick Kids! « Notes From The Attic  I'm still shy of my fundraising goal. I'd appreciate any help in the way of donations and by spreading the word by sharing this info. Thanks!

Kong Gets Some New Teeth

It was suggested to me by Paul Gill of Gillman Productions that to make creating a mold of Kong as easy as possible the bottom jaw would need to be removable. So here is some photos of Kong's new bottom jaw and his new teeth.

What Color Should I Dye My Hair For My Mohawk?

I'm closing in on the halfway mark of my fundraising goal for The St.Baldrick's Foundation for childhood cancer research. So far I've auctioned two pieces of artwork! And a third sculpture will be sold this Thursday. If I can reach $1000.00 by June 28th I'll dye my hair and shave it into a mohawk.

I have a poll up on my Facebook fanpage to pick what color I should dye it. I'm asking everyone to pop on over and cast your vote for the color you'd like to see. And if you'd like leave a comment so I know what color you picked:   https://www.facebook.com/BlacknickSculpture Thanks!
