I have one of my original dinosaur sculpture up for auction on eBay. It is similar to the film version stegosaurus in King Kong as it has pebbly skin and eight tail spikes. Proceeds from the final bid price will go to benefit the St.Baldricks Foundation for childhood cancer research.

Welcome to the new followers of my blog! I wanted to give a heads up about an article I wrote about creating a diorama of the King Kong spider pit and its denizens. It appears in the current issue (# 101 ) of The Prehistoric Times : http://www.prehistorictimes.com/

It was suggested by Paul Gill of Gillman Productions that the Kong bust I'm working on for him could use some wrinkles in the brow area and beefing up in the shoulder and back area. I tackled the wrinkles first. 
The shoulders and back were a bigger undertaking! It pained me to have to cut into the areas I had so painstakingly detailed to look like fur.
After I removed the clay from the back I had to build up the armature. To do this I used balsa wood spacers cut to the shape of the back. In between the wood spacers I packed crumbled aluminum foil to bulk up the back area.
Once I had the general shape of the back done I covered it in a then layer of Ave's Apoxie Sculpt clay.

I've been asked by Mr. Paul Gill of Gillman Productions to create a new Kong bust. You folks may remember my original bust (B&W photo) that I recently sold on eBay.The new bust is too be somewhat smaller in size to make casting it in resin easier. I was also asked to redesign the shoulders of the bust so it sits in a more aesthetically pleasing way.
In my original piece the native was being munched on in a face up position. In the recreation the native will be face down.
Mr. Gill also asked me to give the fur on the recreation a bit more detailing than the original sculpture had.
After seeing wip photos of the new bust it was thought the creases I utilized to detail the brow area of the original sculpture looked too stark. So we are going with a more veiny, wrinkly type look on the brows.
To achieve this look tiny strips of clay are positioned using a 0000 detail brush. Then after melding them in place the brush is again used to carefully remove the tool marks. Finally a larger brush is used to blend the wrinkle in with the surrounding brow area.
I have one brow finished and I have to say that I do like the veiny look better
than just creases alone!
Well I promised to get a curly perm on St. Patrick's Day if I could raise $250.00 for the St.Baldrick's Foundation for childhood cancer research. I recently passed the $300.00 dollar mark - and yes I got the perm.

The curly do definitely takes some getting used too! Its like having permanent bed head. Anyway onwards and upwards! My next hurdle is to raise $1500. at which point I'll dye it before shaving it!
Diane and I were pretty busy this morning. I was sculpting and restringing my guitar and Diane was making a huge batch of sausage, meatballs and spaghetti sauce.
Its hard to believe an Irish gal makes such a killer sauce! Oh did I mention she was Irish?
And tonight when the rest of the family is having corned beef and cabbage I'll be having salmon. I hope my Irishman in good standing card doesn't get revoked.

As for myself I've been busy sculpting a new Kong bust. Here is a wip photo of what I've gotten done so far.
There is still a tremendous amount of skin detailing and fur work that needs to be done. The native in his mouth also needs to be completed.
Each year my family and friends have been supporting my efforts to raise money for the St.Baldrick's Foundation to help fund childhood cancer research by shaving my head.
The first year I was involved I had a lot of hair! So before I shaved my head I had it cut so I could donate it to Locks of Love.
The salon I went to provides free haircuts to anyone that donates their hair to Locks of Love. After the gal cut off my ponytail she kept fussing over my hair and I told her it doesn't matter because its getting shaved off tomorrow!
But she wouldn't hear of it! She insisted that I have a good haircut for one last day! It must be a woman/hair thing.
Which brings to mind one St.Patty's day when my wife Diane tried her hand at creating a mohawk before the final shaving.
Now I have photos of the whole haircutting episode but she forbids me from posting them because in the pictures her hair is messy and she is in her pajamas!
This year if I can raise $250.00 dollars by March 17th I'll be getting a curly perm! I'm imagining it will look something like Will Ferrel if he stuck his finger in a wall outlet.
